高中英语阅读训练 HK PolyU Launching Sportswear Design Class The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) announced on Tuesday the launch of the region's first sportswear design course aiming to cater to the industry demand for additional manpower ahead of the 2008 Olympics. The brand-new subject, officially named "Sportswear Design and Manufacture", will be optional for second-year students majoring in Fashion and Textile at the university's Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC), starting from the 2007/2008 academic year. The curriculum encapsulates the global sportswear market; the history of popular sports and sportswear; design concepts for sportswear; fabrics and materials for sportswear; machinery and sportswear manufacturing as well as quality requirements. Students will not only be treated to lectures from guest speakers but the budding designers will also tour Chinese mainland factories to gain in-depth knowledge of the industry. The university attracted investment from the local sportswear industry with Win Hanverky Holdings Limited making a generous contribution of 628,000 HK dollars towards the new initiative. Speaking on Tuesday, Win Hanverky Co-Founder and Chairman Li Kwok-tung stated, "sportswear is not only for athletes anymore but provides trendy clothing options for mass consumers. For the industry to continue to thrive, we must breed more professionals who can provide innovative designs and devote themselves to improving the industry's competitiveness." Associate Professor Dr. Allan Chan commented that this pioneering subject would increase awareness of this sophisticated market and provide good opportunities for industry and student alike.
